Description

A member of the methylxanthine group of chemicals. It relaxes and expands the bronchial tubes to make it easier for the rat to breath. It works by relaxing the lung muscles, making the airways more resistant to irritants and strengthening the diaphragm.

Uses

• For use in pneumonia
• Certain heart conditions
• A diuretic (used to increase urine formation and output)
• Asthma

Dosage

• 2.5 to 5mg/lb two or three times a day by injection (7)
• 250mg/10mL solution - 0.10 to 0.20cc/lb (7)
• 3-100 mg/kg three times a day by injection (27)

Side Effects

• Nervousness
• Restlessness
• Itching
• Seizures
• Increased and or irregular heart rate
• Irritation in the stomach

Warnings

Can have a stimulant effect, causing an already over-stressed rat to have panic attack like symptoms.

Incompatibilities

Enrofloxacin, Cimetidine, Clindamycin, Erythromycin
