Description

It is similar in structure, mechanism of action, and spectrum as that of Erythromycin, but more active against certain Mycoplasma.

 

Uses

  • Mild and chronic symptoms of respiratory disease caused by Mycoplasma, however does not always show any effect
  • Sking/soft tissue infections caused by some Streptococci

 

Dosage

  • 4.5mg/lb BID, PO, SQ or IM for 14 to 30 days (7)
  • 0.5 mg/kg in drinking water (20)
  • 10 mg/kg orally or by injection twice a day (20)

 

Side Effects

  • Diarrhea
  • Liver damage
  • Itching

 

Warnings

  • Remove moist food from diet to try to encourage the rat to drink.
  • An injectable form is available, but pain and swelling occur at the injection site
  • Frequently has no effect on symptoms

 

Incompatibilities

Chloramphenicol Palmitate, Chloramphenicol Sodium Succinate, macrolides (Azithromycin, Clarithromycin, Erythromycin) - chloramphenicol has mechanisms similar to the macrolides; they may be prevented from binding, or prevent a macrolide from binding to the subunits of bacterial ribosomes.
