Description

Prednisone and Prednisolone are both members of the glucocorticoid class of hormones.  They are used to treat a variety of conditions that involve inflammation.

Prednisone is activated by the patient's liver into prednisolone.

These medications are considered to be interchangeable.

 

Uses

  • Inner ear infections, wry neck
  • Pituitary tumours
  • Respiratory disorders such as pneumonia
  • Severe itching
  • In treating shock to improve circulation
  • Pneumonia
  • Inner ear infection/wryneck
  • Injury
  • Pituitary tumours

 

Dosage

  • 0.25 to 1mg/lb SID, PO (7)
  • Oral Solution 1mg/mL - 0.25 to 1cc/lb (7)
  • 0.5-0.22 mg by injection (20)

 

Side Effects

  • Cataracts
  • Glaucoma
  • Delayed wound healing
  • Excessive thirst and excessive urination
  • Atrophy at injection site

 

Warnings

  • Can depress the immune system over time, so do not over do the length of the dosage.
  • Glucocorticoid hormones can cause abortion in pregnant patients. They should not be used in pregnancy. (21)

 

Incompatibilities

NSAIDs, eg. Aspirin
