It may result from the stomach becoming bloated or filled with gas, the intestines twisting or rolling up on themselves, or faeces becoming impacted in the bowel.
Diarrhoea can also be caused by a build-up of internal parasites, by dietary changes or because of a number of different bacteria. Diets with less than 5% fibre will predispose rats to diarrhoea. It can also be signs of other diseases, notably Tyzzer's disease and Megacolon.
