Rocket squeaking non-stop as if sore - help!Thu, 08/21/2008 - 11:30
This morning Rocket was squeaking (& it sounded like a painful squeak) whenever any of the others touched her. Rather than lying on the radiator like she normally does, she sat on a toilet roll & she squeaked when I went to pick her up to put her back in her cage for her food. I let her walk onto my hand but she was squeaking all the time & when I walked to the phone to speak to the vet she kept at it & I couldn't see anything wrong! When I put her back in her cage she went into the boys' bed rather than where she usually goes, though she did have something to eat. I did see a bit of porphoryn on her nose but she looked quite bright eyed. I can't see good vet till tomorrow afternoon at 3pm & I am going to have to take time off work to do so. I am going to finish early tonight to check on her & will take her to not-so-good vet if needs be. Has anyone come across this? It seemed to me like she was sore all over, or very, very sensitive. Help! Poor Rocketys. __________________

Her tail seems OK now thankfully - I even tweaked it gently recently & there were no squeaks! It is still not sitting in the right position but she doesn't seem to mind that!

Herbie enjoyed the kisses and sends some back to little Miss Rocket :) No, there was no necrosis with his tail. The vet seemed to think it was a damaged ligament or a torn muscle. It was very painful for him at the time and, to be honest, the Metacam didn't really seem to do much. How is Rocket's tail now? Scritches to her!
I do remember you posting about Herbie! I take it there was no necrosis with his tail? The vet said to keep an eye on it in case the circulation isn't working properly & the end goes necrotic but everything seems OK. Rocket says thanks for the kisses & send sloppy licks back. Mmmmmm!

Rocket's injury sounds very similar to what happened with my Herbie. Back in April he had pain at the base of his tail, was coiling it in strange movements, and was at times screaming in pain but there was nothing to see and no swelling. My vet is a good rat vet also, and what a difference this makes! But like your vet, he couldn't really be sure what it was and prescribed Metacam for 10 days. The pain did subside, and after a week I had my happy Herbie back! But 4 months on, Herbie still at times weaves his tail from side-to-side as if something is still not quite right and I do occasionally hear the odd squeak. So here's hoping Rocket's tail damage will heal and completely.
Herbie sends kisses :D x x x
Well of course Rocket didn't squeak at all when she was at the vets! She seems almost back to normal and the vet wasn't sure what it was, but she is holding her tail in a strange way & he said it felt a bit strange at the base so he thinks she has damaged it. So she is to get a drop of metacam for the next 10 days - she will enjoy that.
It was a relief being able to see good vet again as he has been on holiday!

Scritches to little Rocket! Hope it was a good report from the vet!
Thanks Sarah. She did seem almost recovered yesterday when I got home but she is still off to the vet today at 3pm to make sure. Fingers crossed it is something minor.

Aw,poor little Rocket...very gentle scritches to her.
I have come accross this once, you know rats pull a muscle from time to time and squeak when you touch it,well once Mab acted like that. She complained whenever I picked her up or touched her but there was no limping. After a couple of days it went and she was fine so I presume it was something she'd pulled, which tends to heal very quickly.
I hope thats all it is for your Rocket xxx
