Fat ChiSat, 08/09/2008 - 12:33
All my rats are different sizes.Nixie is just right.Tilah is extra small and I have to sneak her extra tidbits to bulk her up.But Chi.Wow.She is Huge! She started off tiny like Nix when they were kittens but she used to gobble her own weight in food and consequently grew huge in every direction. She is more like a buck in length, tail, head size, feet etc. She is still obsessed with food.It must be genetic. She obviously needs to lose some weight as she has a spare tyre round her middle but my dilemma is this.Do I need to separate her to slim her down?I feed them all healthily and I give Chi half portions but due to the others habit of stashing rather than eating immediately she then goes and hoovers up their leftovers or bashes them out the way with her huge bum and mugs them! Or am I worrying over nothing? Is it likely she'll lose weight as she gets older anyway as alot of geriatric animals do?

That's great, Sarah, about the new super-slim Chi! It sounds like she's enjoying herself even more than before with all the new energy :) It's strange because Phoebe has actually put on weight since being in the hospital cage. I'm now having to cut down on her porridge!
Ten days in a hospital cage and my Chi has really slimmed down.
She looks great, can get around faster and has more energy.
I've decided that if she bulks up again I will put her in a 'diet cage' for a week, with Nixie for company and still have her free ranging with the others a.m and p.m...I'll just have to be careful theres no food lying around!..She's like a Dyson!!
Thanks,LoopyLupins..I didn't know it could be genetic(shame I can't use that excuse :D) that does make sense as I am so careful with feeding and felt like a really bad mum for having a fattie rattie ,I'm glad other people have had that experience too,it puts my mind at rest
Sarah x
I have tried to put some of my fatty ratties on diets in the past but it doesn't seem to work! My vet did say that some of them are genetically prone to be fatties but that doesn't really help!

Well,I've lost Tilah now so I don't have to put so much food in the bowl as thers no skinnies to feed up!...so I think Chi's lost a little bit of weight.
Thanks ,Rachel,I'm going to stop worrying about it as I'm a bit of a chozza too and I'm pretty healthy LOL!
Hi Sarah, quiet around here isn't it? :?
I too have an over sized rattie girl, Chicca, as well as her slender companion, Boo. I don't worry too much as I think that they may be different builds to start with. As long as they seem healthy and happy I'd let them be (but I'm guilty of sneaking Boo extra treats to build her up too ;) )
